Before we were married (or even dating) my husband bought a wall hanging in Kenya.
I think it is made of old saris/scarves or something like that, and is from somewhere like India or Bangladesh - but I'm not sure...
I think it is made from whatever colours they have and is then dyed (in this case red).
At first I didn't like it but more recently I've been looking at it more closely, wondering who wore these different pieces of cloth and what the story of the fabrics in it is. Now I really like it!
If only cloth could talk...
I love those things! Especially how they're always put together without too much concern for precision. The fabrics are usually pretty interesting to look at too!

By the way, there are lots of Indians living in Kenya so maybe it was made in Kenya by a transplanted Indian. I've dropped mucho hints to family that one of these would be a welcome gift but no luck so far.
How wonderful, Lucy; I love all those different textures and patterns, and the decoratve threads in between! I have a pillow made exactly the same way.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors and the primitive way of seaming. It is beautiful!!!
